"It's not what you measure... it's what you do with the measurement."
Some companies love dashboards. Colorful charts, numbers trending up, green arrows everywhere. It looks like success. But when you ask, "So what changed after you saw these numbers?", the room goes quiet.
Metrics exist to guide decisions. If they don't guide action, they are just decoration.
Vanity metrics vs. Actionable metrics
Vanity metrics:
- Total registered users (how many are actually active?)
- Page views (did they convert into anything meaningful?)
- Features shipped (is anyone using them?)
Actionable metrics:
- Conversion rate
- Incident resolution time
- Cost per transaction
- Active NPS (not a survey you send once a year)
The difference? Actionable metrics carry consequences. When the number moves, you do something differently.
The useful metric test
For every metric you track, ask four questions:
- If this number goes up, what do we do?
- If this number goes down, what do we do?
- Who reviews this number on a regular schedule?
- Has any real decision ever been made because of it?
If the answers are vague, you are looking at a vanity metric.
Less is more
It is tempting to measure everything. But too many metrics turn into noise. Focus on the 3 to 5 indicators that truly matter for your current stage. Once those improve and stabilize, shift your focus.
The ritual makes the difference
A metric without a ritual is dead data. Set regular cadences to review the numbers. Discuss variances. Make decisions. And track whether those decisions actually worked.
Measuring is easy. Acting on what you measure is the hard part. And it is the only part that pays off.
Good ideas keep the conversation going.

Vanity metrics look great in presentations, but they don't change outcomes. Learn how to measure what actually drives action.
