"Technology is not neutral. Those who build it decide whom it serves."
Dark patterns. Data sold without consent. Addictive algorithms. Technology can be a tool for empowerment or a mechanism for control. The difference lies in the choices made by the people who build it.
The front-page test
Before implementing a feature, run this simple test: if this were on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow, would you feel proud or ashamed? If the answer is ashamed, rethink it.
Common dilemmas
1. "It's what the client asked for"
Yes, and you know it will harm the end user. Executing blindly means outsourcing your ethics.
2. "Everyone does it this way"
Normalization is not justification. If everyone is doing the wrong thing, it is still wrong.
3. "It's not illegal"
Legal is not synonymous with ethical. Plenty of unethical practices are completely legal.
How to build an ethical culture
1. Open discussions
Create space for the team to question product decisions. "Is this the right thing to do?" should be a normal engineering question, not an act of insubordination.
2. Diverse perspectives
Homogeneous teams have blind spots. Different backgrounds and viewpoints spot different risks.
3. Visible consequences
If someone flags unethical behavior and nothing happens (or worse, they face retaliation), the message is unmistakable: ethics here are just theater.
The mark you leave behind
Your reputation is built one decision at a time. Unethical shortcuts may look advantageous in the short term. Over the long run, they erode trust. And once trust is lost, it is extraordinarily hard to rebuild.
Build things you would be proud to explain to your children. That is the ultimate filter.
Good ideas keep the conversation going.
